It was launched back in 2005 and sold over 41 million units worldwide since then. Xbox 360 uses a PowerPC CPU from IBM, ATI Xenos graphics system and has 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. Unlike PS3, it can only playback regular DVDs and not Blu-ray ones. However, Xbox Live users can watch streaming movies, including the ones in HD quality.

The strongest sides of Xbox 360 are online play via Xbox Live service and exclusive games like the Halo series. It also boasts a high attach rate, although PS3 is catching up.

About Playstation 3

It was launched at the end of 2006 in US and Japan, but delayed until 2007 in the rest of the world. Since then it has sold over 38 million units worldwide. Playstation 3 uses a unique Cell Broadband Engine CPU developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba, as well as an RSX Reality Synthesizer graphics system from nVidia. It has 256 MB system and 256 MB video memory and is capable of playing back Blu-ray movies. Playstation 3 users can enjoy free online multiplayer gameplay through the PlayStation Network (PSN).

The strong sides of Playstation 3 are its technological advantages and free online services with PSN. However, some developers claim that it's harder to make games for.
XBOX VS PS3

Xbox 360 and PS3 are both excellent gaming consoles. People like to discuss their pros and cons, but of course comparing two systems of vastly different architecture is not as simple as comparing two different gaming PCs. Take their technical specifications and graphics for example: while the PS3 theoretically has more raw processing power due to its touted Cell processor, a game on Playstation 3 usually doesn't look any better than the same game on Xbox 360. It's unclear whether that's due to the limits of the consoles, or the developers not using the potential of the complicated Cell architecture to its fullest - simply because it would take too much time and work to adapt.

As for the pricing, Xbox 360 has been a winner in this area from the start. However, as Sony was able to reduce their considerable manufacturing costs and release a 120 GB - and later a 160 GB 45nm PS3 Slim for a competitive price of $249, they are definitely coming in close.

Both Microsoft and Sony offer highly popular multiplayer gaming and content distribution services for the users of their consoles. As of 2011, PlayStation Network has over 60 million subscribers worldwide, while Xbox Live is 30 million users strong.
