The LG Optimus Black- Designed for the Bold

With most major companies releasing their flagship models, this device was LG's answer to give consumers a phone with a simple profile, yet powerful hardware waiting to surprise you.
In this review I'll be critically analyzing the LG Optimus Black on basic parameters and give my final verdict.

Design- The LG Optimus Black has a very minimalistic approach looking from the design point of view. It's neither too gaudy, nor too boring; just a perfect balance. It boasts a NOVA 4 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with a good screen resolution of 480x800 pixels. It's very slim and hardly has any weight to it. The curves at the back make it feel even slimmer. You have four capacitive navigation buttons, namely Menu, Home, Back and Search. There's a volume rocker on the left side and is also the home of the G-button(which we'll delve into later).  There's a 2 MP front facing camera and a 5 MP autofocus camera accompanied by an LED flash.

Build Quality- The LG Optimus Black is constructed from premium aluminium. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla glass. So even if you do drop the Black by mistake, all you can see is a few scratches at the back, but the screen will remain unscathed.

Functionality- The LG Optimus Black is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor and runs on Android 2.2 FroYo. The OS is upgradable to the reputed 2.3 Gingerbread platform. Most of us would think that the A9 chipset is ideal for any Android smartphone, but it's not the same in the case of the Black,  because it operates very smoothly with hardly any lag. The web browser supports HTML and Adobe Flash; kinetic scrolling and gestures work well. Now, coming to the G-button, what is it? It simply acts as a gyroscope for you to navigate around the phones sub-systems. It can be used to navigate through the app drawer and also to scroll through web pages, but we preferred the classic hand gestures. It functions on the basis of two user interfaces, namely the Optimus UI 2.0 and the Gesture UI 2.0 which are pretty much similar to Samsung's TouchWiz UI. You have a multitude of widgets at your disposal through which you can customize homescreens. The camera at the front is great for taking portrait images and making video calls. The 5 MP camera at the back gives some good shots and can record 720p@30fps.

Pricing- The price of the LG Optimus Black was the most notable feature of the device; just $290. You can also buy the device on contract  with various mobile carriers. Trust me, you will be getting great value for your
money.

The Verdict- Overall, the LG Optimus Black has the making of a great smartphone. It's got the looks, a respected OS and most of all, a price which will make it sell like hot cakes. You won't find a better phone in the Black's price range. From us, it's a definite go for the LG Optimus Black.
