Ever since Samsung released its first Galaxy Tab 7, the manufacturers have always been trying to bring about changes with respect to design and functionality in order to pit the Tab against the King of all Tablets- The iPad.
In this review I'll be critically analyzing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on the basis of design, build quality, functionality and pricing after which I will give a final verdict.Design- The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is by far the lightest(560g) and thinnest(8.6mm) tablet computer in existence. It is button-less and boasts a 10.1 inch PLS TFT capacitive touchscreen. You have the speakers on the left and right sides and the volume rocker and power at the top which are easy to press.There is a 2 megapixel camera at the front and a decent 3.15 megapixel camera at the back with LED flash. It also has a dock port for data transfer and charging.
Build Quality- The Tab 10.1 is very light due to the choice of materials used by Samsung. At the back is textured plastic which makes the device easy to hold and also acts as a shock absorber. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla glass(the toughest kind of glass) which prevents any scratches from occurring if the device is dropped.
Functionality- The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is powered by a 1GHz dual core Cortex A9 which makes multi tasking effortlessly fluid. It is a Honeycomb flavored tablet,i.e., it runs on Android 3.0 Honeycomb(the previous ones being run on 2.2 Froyo) which is specially designed for tablets and the navigation icons(Home, Back, Menu) are present on the screen itself, hence, a button-less tablet.It works on the basis of the TouchWiz UX user interface which is very eye catching. The Web browser supports HTML and Flash, hence giving a PC like browsing experience. The Tab 10.1 doesn't have an external SD card slot, but concerning connectivity, it can turn into a Wi-fi Hotspot(emit Wireless internet for other devices to use). The front facing 2 megapixel camera enables video calling and the 3.15 megapixel camera at the back has auto focus and can shoot some reasonably decent images. The widgets present on various pages can be resized to the user's wishes which helps in accommodating space for more such widgets.
Pricing- The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes in many variants but only the prices of a few of them are known as of yet. The 16GB Wi-fi model is priced at $579(USD), whereas the 16GB Wi-fi+3G model comes at a price of $729(USD). The 64GB Wi-fi+3G model is available for $949(USD).
The Verdict- Overall, being the lightest and thinnest tablet in the market, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 called the real rival for the iPad 2. Surprisingly, we observed that the price of the Tab surpassed that of the iPad 2. The iPad 2 actually offers more functionality than the Tab 10.1; so you can actually get more for less. However, if you love Android, the Tab 10.1 is soon to get an Ice Cream Sandwich OS upgrade which is the most advanced OS from Android's line-up.Also, the New iPad has been launched whose features are, well........simply resolutionary!!! So hold on to your wallets.
