Amazon comes from the respected e-book background, famous for its vast e-book store and e-book reader, the Kindle. Now what would be the product of the culmination of an Amazon Kindle and a tablet computer? You get the Amazon Kindle Fire.
In this review, I'll be critically analyzing the Amazon Kindle Fire on the basis of design, build quality, functionality and pricing after which I will give a final verdict.Design- When we looked at the Fire for the first time, we noticed that it was box-like and was pretty dull in its physical execution(compared to other stylish tablet PCs). It sports a 7 inch IPS(In-Plane Switching)TFT capacitive touchscreen. When held upright, there are two speakers on top and at the bottom, there is a power button, a mini USB port and 3.5 mm headset jack. Unfortunately, there is no volume rocker and no cameras on either side of the Fire which was, well...........pretty sad.
Build Quality- The build quality of the Amazon Kindle Fire is decent. It has a matte soft touch coating at the back and around the borders. Since it is bulky, it is also quite strong and won't get extensively damaged if it is dropped by mistake.
Functionality- We thought that with such a boring design, the functionality offered by the Kindle Fire would also be sub-standard. But we were taken aback when we used the Fire hands-on. It is powered by a dual core 1GHz Cortex A9 processor which works very smoothly while navigating through various tasks. It runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread; yes the Kindle Fire is an Android!! But if you look at it for the first time, it won't look like Android since it is Amazon's customized version of the OS. We dug deep into the system and we did find some of the characteristics of Android in the Menus and Notifications. The Notification panel at the top is important for the volume of music and other multimedia content can be changed only from there. The Fire uses Amazon's Silk browser which works well and supports HTML but not Flash. And it does not work on any cellular services; the Kindle Fire is strictly Wi-fi only. Finally, it does what it can do best- store a large number of e-books from the Amazon e-book Store which the user can access anytime.
Pricing- We were very impressed with the Kindle Fire's price tag, just $180(USD). You can't ask for anything else. If you want a tablet PC without burning a big hole in your wallet, don't care about its looks, go get the Amazon Kindle Fire.
The Verdict- Overall, the Kindle is a great buy for those who want to make their first venture into the field of tablet PCs. The Kindle Fire is probably the world's cheapest tablet computer,no one can resist that rock-bottom price. You think the Kindle is a bit too basic in features, then you must try the RIM Blackberry Playbook which runs on Blackberry OS 7 and has cameras at the front and back. It is priced at $270(USD), $320(USD) and $490(USD) for the 16, 32 and 64 Gigabyte models respectively.
